The website www.williamslakeband.com takes its inspiration from the plight of the Indian people of North America. Typical of these sad narratives of discrimination and attempts at cultural genocide is the history of the Secwepemc People. Their leader in 1879 was Chief William. His speech quoted on the home page of this website captures the problems of many indigenous peoples around the world - how their land has been taken away, how the promises made to them have been broken, and how they attempt to find peaceful solutions to co-existence with the new arrivals but by doing so clash with a younger generation who want to fight for their rights.

Chief William was a wise and a great leader, but also a pathetic one. The pathos is that nothing could help the Secwepemc People but because they could not help themselves. This is at the heart of the subject matter of this website.
